Recently, InterDigital filed another patent lawsuit against Disney, bringing a claim for damages before the First Regional Court of Munich, Germany, seeking 101.7 million euros (approximately 788 million RMB).

The case number for this German lawsuit is 7 O 8870/26. Previously, the Munich court had already found Disney guilty of infringing the patent and issued an injunction against the company. The patent in question, EP 2 132 923, pertains to High Dynamic Range (HDR) video technology. This technology is used to enhance the brightness, contrast, and color reproduction of video images; features previously offered by Disney+, such as Dolby Vision, involve HDR technology.

In November 2025, the First Regional Court of Munich ruled on this patent, finding Disney guilty of infringement and granting InterDigital an injunction. Subsequently, Disney ceased offering the relevant Dolby Vision features in Germany. The current claim for damages pertains to Disney’s prior use of the patent—specifically, Disney+’s operation in Germany from its launch in March 2020 until the Munich court’s ruling in 2025—with the total amount claimed amounting to 101.7 million euros (approximately 788 million yuan).

InterDigital’s Chief Legal Officer, Josh Schmidt, stated that the company still hopes to ultimately reach a long-term licensing agreement with Disney.

In fact, the patent dispute between InterDigital and Disney has continued to escalate in recent months. This marks the third time since August of this year that InterDigital has taken new legal action against Disney.

In June 2026, the Mannheim Regional Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) found Disney guilty of infringing an InterDigital patent related to HEVC video coding technology and issued an injunction covering 11 EU member states; in July, the Düsseldorf Regional Division of the UPC issued another injunction regarding a different HEVC-related patent, also covering 11 European countries.

On August 24, InterDigital filed two additional lawsuits with the UPC. The Mannheim case involved EP 2 465 265 and targeted Disney’s use of VP9 video coding technology; the Düsseldorf case involved EP 2 605 473 and targeted the “Up-Next” feature on Disney+. On September 2, the UPC Düsseldorf Regional Division issued another ruling regarding a patent related to Disney+, finding InterDigital’s narrowed claims valid and determining that Disney had committed indirect infringement. The court ordered Disney to cease providing the infringing services in Germany and the Netherlands, and to comply with disclosure obligations and pay damages. Sixth Injunction Issued! Consequently, this German damages lawsuit is not a new case in the dispute between the two parties, but rather a further extension of InterDigital’s recent litigation efforts. While seeking injunctions through German courts and the UPC, InterDigital has begun to pursue financial liability for prior acts of infringement and continues to press Disney to obtain a license for the relevant video technology.
