On July 8, 2026, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) disclosed information regarding a patent infringement case: On April 17 of this year, Velos filed a patent infringement lawsuit with the Munich Regional Division of the UPC, alleging that Hisense infringed one of its European patents. Founded in 2017, Velos Media International Limited is a video coding patent licensing platform primarily responsible for the licensing and management of patents related to HEVC (H.265) video coding technology. Its patent portfolio covers HEVC standard-essential patents held by multiple companies and provides patent licensing services to enterprises in the consumer electronics, mobile devices, and content services sectors.

The patent at issue in this case is European Patent EP4258663, titled “Multiple Sign Bit Hiding Within a Transform Unit.” This patent relates to the field of video coding technology and primarily concerns coding methods for hiding the sign bits of transform coefficients during the video compression process. By processing multiple sign bits within a single transform unit, it improves video coding efficiency and reduces the coding bit rate, and can be applied to video coding technologies such as HEVC (H.265).
