Recently, Huawei filed a lawsuit against Meta at the Mannheim Regional Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC), alleging that Meta has infringed on Huawei’s High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265) patents. Previously, Huawei had filed separate infringement lawsuits against Meta regarding patents in the same technical field at the Munich Regional Division of the UPC and in Brazil.
On February 20, 2026, Huawei filed a patent infringement lawsuit against nine legal entities under Meta, including Facebook, at the Mannheim Regional Division of the UPC. The patent in question is EP3471419, titled “Progressive Time-Sliced Access to Images in Video Compression.” The court made the case public on March 12.
Concurrently, Huawei has filed another lawsuit against Meta at the UPC Munich Regional Division regarding patent EP2725797, titled “Offset Decoding Device, Offset Encoding Device, Image Filtering Device, and Data Structure.” In Brazil, Huawei has filed a lawsuit against Meta in the Sixth Commercial Court of the State of Rio de Janeiro regarding Brazilian Patent BR 112013034060-6 (Encoding and Decoding Methods and Apparatus).
It is worth noting that Huawei has previously been involved in disputes with Roku, Transsion, and Disney regarding HEVC/H.265 patents. The disputes with Roku and Transsion were ultimately resolved when both companies joined the Access Advanc patent pool and obtained licenses.
