On 30 June 2026, Sisvel announced that Microsoft had officially joined its Wi-Fi multimode patent pool, becoming a licensee of the programme.

Sisvel’s Wi-Fi multimode patent pool was launched in January 2026, providing centralised access to standard-essential patents (SEPs) for the Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standards. The pool’s predecessor, the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool, entered into licensing agreements with nearly 40 companies during its three-year operational period, including Acer, Netgear, Cisco and HP. Sisvel’s previously launched multi-mode programme, covering 2G/3G/4G/5G wireless SEPs, had also successfully licensed Microsoft without triggering any litigation.

Microsoft’s participation brings the total number of licensees in the Sisvel Wi-Fi multi-mode programme to seven. Previous licensees include Asus, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Sony—which obtained licences through settlements last month—as well as Huawei, Panasonic, Philips and ZTE, who are also licensors in the pool. Other licensors in the programme include KPN, Mitsubishi Electric, Orange, Aegis 11, SK Telecom and Wilus.

This agreement further consolidates Microsoft’s strategy of participating in patent pools. Microsoft is both a licensor and a licensee of the Access Advance High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) patent pool, and obtained a licence for the Via HEVC patent pool following the settlement of litigation with licensors M&K, Gensquare LLC and Tagivan II last autumn.

To date, Sisvel has not disclosed the specific royalty rates or the details of the agreement for this patent pool. Microsoft has also not issued any public comment regarding this licence. IP Finance will continue to monitor further developments.
