Recently, Optics Innovation LLC filed three patent infringement lawsuits in the US Federal Court for the Western District of Texas, alleging that smartphone and tablet products manufactured by Apple Inc., OnePlus Technology (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd. and HMD Global infringe upon four camera patents related to digital imaging technology owned by the company. The plaintiff is seeking damages, litigation costs, legal fees and injunctive relief.

On 21 May 2026, Optics Innovation filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc. in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. The complaint alleges that Apple’s iPhone and iPad models infringe four of Optics Innovation LLC’s patents: US Patent Nos. 10,687,708, 10,623,705, 12,336,782 and 11,800,244. These patented technologies are designed to enhance digital images by utilising two cameras with different image resolutions and fields of view, thereby generating images that “mimic the way the human eye perceives the world”. Optics Innovation noted that “Apple devices are designed to capture clear, high-resolution digital photographs… To achieve this, Apple has designed its smart devices with multiple cameras, each offering different functions and resolutions.”

On the same day, Optics Innovation filed separate lawsuits against OnePlus Technology and HMD Global in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, with both cases presided over by Judge Rodney Gilstrap. The lawsuit against OnePlus (Case No. 2:26-cv-00423) alleges that its smartphone series infringes the '708 and '705 patents. The lawsuit against HMD Global (Case No. 2:26-cv-00422) alleges that its HMD Skyline, HMD XR21, Nokia XR21 and Nokia C210 smartphones infringe the '708 patent.
