On May 28, 2025, after more than a year of negotiations, LG announced its participation in Via LA’s Qi wireless charging patent pool, joining as both a licensor and a licensee. LG’s entry increases Via LA’s share of standard-essential patents (SEPs) for the Qi standard to approximately 50%.
LG is a major licensor (and licensee) in the H.264/AVC patent pool, having contributed 64 active patents and 936 expired patents. The company is also a participant in the ATSC 3.0 patent pool and was formerly a licensor in the VC-1 and IEEE 802.11 programs, though it is no longer involved in those projects.
Earlier this year, on March 20, Via LA and Huawei jointly announced a strategic cooperation framework regarding video codec patent pools. Huawei, as both a patent holder and implementer, reached this agreement with Via LA to collaborate on video codec licensing.
It is also worth noting that three HEVC patent pool licensors under Via LA—M&K Holdings, Gensquare, and Tagivan II—have recently filed lawsuits against Microsoft at the Düsseldorf Regional Court in Germany. The lawsuits seek to enforce seven HEVC/VVC SEPs and request injunctive relief.
