On September 18, 2025, Headwater filed a lawsuit against Tencent in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, alleging unauthorized use of push notification technology in popular applications including PUBG: Battlegrounds and WeChat. The patents involved include US9,198,117, US9,615,192, US10,321,320 (Case No.: 2:2025cv00965).

Headwater recently initiated a series of patent infringement lawsuits against companies including Apple, Amazon, and Google in two federal courts in Texas. Additionally, the company has reached settlements with Samsung, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon over patent disputes. Verizon was ordered to pay $175 million in damages this July, while Samsung was initially ordered to pay $278.8 million.

Founded by wireless communications expert Dr. Gregory Raleigh, Headwater holds over 350 patents and is one of the pioneers of MIMO technology. Its team's innovations, including the “Secure Wireless Messaging System,” have been incorporated into 4G/5G standards. The patents at issue in this lawsuit focus on a “secure and efficient push messaging architecture” that enables third-party servers to securely transmit notifications, content, and updates to end-user applications, addressing security and efficiency bottlenecks in traditional systems.
